Francis Chan and David Platt understand the vital importance of spiritual multiplication. Hoping to inspire and equip Christians for disciple-making with potential for going viral, they’ve launched a project known as “Multiply”. Quoting from their website, “The Multiply Movement exists to awaken churches and all followers of Christ to the priority of disciple-making in the church’s mission. The Great Commission applies to every Christian, and the Lord Jesus has promised to be with us in this glorious task. By the power of the Spirit, we seek to make disciples, who make disciples, who make disciples.” Please take two minutes to watch their inspiring video message linked below.
I am totally fired-up about what these guys are saying. “Multiply” fits the same passion, pattern, and simple discipling model that we’ve been attempting to promote and follow from day one of this work, i.e. making disciples who make more disciples.
Spreading the gospel by spiritual multiplication is not a new concept, but it’s an idea easily brushed aside due to the personal commitment required. It takes time and patience to make a disciple. Investing in another person’s life may prove inconvenient and “messy”. Jesus never promised convenience. He just commissioned his followers to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19) They did, and the church spread like wildfire from person to person, city to city, nation to nation, and generation to generation! Paul also instilled the idea of multiplication to his son in the faith, Timothy, saying, “You and many others have heard what I have taught. You should teach the same thing to men you can trust. Then they will be able to teach it to others.” (Second Timothy 2:2)
